zombieThe University of Florida’s response plans for a zombie apocalypse are no longer available for public consumption.

UF spokesman Steve Orlando said Friday the university removed a link to a disaster recovery exercise, which detailed how the school could respond to an outbreak of the undead. The link was taken down late Thursday afternoon.

Orlando says officials felt the joke “didn’t really belong” on the site, which also included plans for dealing with hurricanes and pandemics.

The exercise lays out the university’s response to attacks by “flesh-eating, apparently life impaired individuals.” It notes that a zombie outbreak might include “documentation of lots of strange moaning.”

Orlando says the employee who wrote the gag wasn’t punished.

So I have not been posting much here. No one has noticed so the joke is on me. But anyway I have come to realize my own mortality and at 43 I think that I am about to start some kind of mid life crisis, acutally I think the process has already begun.

I always told my wifethat when I had my midlife crisis I would need to make sure that I had money for a Porsche and a hooker but now that the time has actually come the future has been a little darker. I have realized that after life or not (still kind of on the fence with that one) that I need to persue things that will make a difference. I have been working on a year long project that ends in a week and realized that this has no way of changing the world as we know it, heck it may not even change the end users life at work all that much so I am thinking that I have to radically change direction is the second half of my life is going to be any better than the first.

I have a lot ot be thankful for, a wife kids, a roof over my head. But really how musch effect other than ego is all this stuff? If I can create values that carry forward than it would be great and the kids would be a good vehicle for that but still I am not sure how this effects things much at all either unless I have somehow accidently bred world changers.

So I am going to spend the next few weeks on this blog more trying to find that change. If anyone reads this you can help too.

I will reflect on the past, look forward to the future and post what I am doing presently to make a difference.

Oh, and that will be boring enough for this blog to live up to it’s name. I will try to inject funny in the heaviness as well.

During the run up to the US Presidential election my wife, who is not interested in politicsat all asked me.

“Why is Osama Bin Laden running for president?”

Of course the only answer I could give her was.

Huh?

“I just saw an ad on TV and there was a sign for Osama Bin Laden”

Are you sure it wasn’t Obama-Biden?”

“Oh, OK”

Well last night we were watching a bit of Larry King, actually I was watching and Michelle was trying to sleep and she asked me (now knowing who the hell Obama is).

“What ever happened to that bidden guy?’”

“His name is Biden, and he is the vice president tomorrow”

“Really, so it’s not Osama Bin Laden” hahaha We have been laughing about this for a few months now that she has the scoop.

She turned around to look at the TV “He’s an old white guy? He’s never going to be president”

“Well he has been a senator since he was 19 and he ran for president twice. Barack could have chosen the woman as a VP candidate but instead he picked he safe old white guy.”

“Well he is old, why didn’t he change his name yet?”

I have been back to work for a week now and I must say that it is really nice to be back. A few years ago I took a couple of weeks at Christmas and it drove Michelle crazy. Me and nothing to do is not a very good sight. I should do a bit of a video for anyone that has not seen me in action but in just a few minutes I can switch topics a couple of times and talk too fast and too loud as well.

Anyway I was off this year for two weeks again and even though I did not completly drive my family crazy I was starting to miss Dave, Christina and Martin and doing way to much Twittering and seeing too many movies.

Being back I am getting closer to another release upgrade of the software that I support and am really happy that I am finally hands on for something besides kids and cleaning the house.

Here is a picture of a netbook. If my wife sees it maybe she will order it from Dell for me.

I told this to both Daves and forgot about blogging about it.

I did not have dreams in my last house, mostly because I had a bus that would stop in front of our house all night every night and keep my sleeping light, not deeply at all. Now that I have moved to Airdrie it is nice and quiet and I have been dreaming lots.

Most of my dreams involve me being at work naked or at school and not knowing where I am going. The naked dream always is me sitting at work and realizing that I am naked and when I walk around people are a little shocked (as they should be) at my nakedness. I wonder if this dream is because I used to run on airport runways naked after a night of drinking (very bad idea, could lead to prison) or the fact that I did a strip show once at a pizza drink, again after drinking too much.

When I tell my daughter about the naked dream all she says is “Is your penis showing? Can everyone see your penis?” Well yes, I would suspect that is what they are looking at when they are shocked.

The other dream that I have is that I am going to high school but I have missed a bunch of English classes, which could be because I graduated over 20 years ago, and do not know my locker number or even where my class is.

So earlier this week we had a dream that I was Superman-like. I could jump up and start flying, this was a great dream and one I never had. I did not have any special powers like x-ray vision or burning eye rays or anything.

So hopefully in the future I have less of the naked dreams as well as those stupid school dreams and more super hero dreams. My question though is, how can I have more interesting dreams? I know years back the nicotine patches that I used to try to quit smoking worked well, maybe I can get more of those.

Well thanks to Wikipedia and a question from Dave D I now know that Canada is sucking this year at the Olympics. This post is in no way trying to rub the Canadian athletes noses in the fact that Canada has really underperformed this year. But we have. When you look at the table below remember that the Olympics in LA in 1984 was the year that the Russkies boycotted after the US and others boycotted in 1980, tit for tat.

Here is the list for past years even though this year we have no medals so far. Apparently there will be more medals, including some Olympic medals for Canada this week. I for one will be watching.

Games Flagbearer Gold Silver Bronze Total
1896 Athens did not compete
1900 Paris None 1 0 1 2
1904 St. Louis None 4 1 1 6
1908 London None 3 3 10 16
1912 Stockholm Duncan Gillis 3 2 3 8
1920 Antwerp Archie McDiarmid 3 3 3 9
1924 Paris Hector Phillips 0 3 1 4
1928 Amsterdam Joseph Wright Jr. 4 4 7 15
1932 Los Angeles George Maughan 2 5 8 15
1936 Berlin James Worrall 1 3 5 9
1948 London Robert McFarlane 0 1 2 3
1952 Helsinki William Parnell 1 2 0 3
1956 Melbourne Robert Steckle 2 1 3 6
1960 Rome Carl Schwende 0 1 0 1
1964 Tokyo Gilmour Boa 1 2 1 4
1968 Mexico City Roger Jackson 1 3 1 5
1972 Munich Doug Roges 0 2 3 5
1976 Montreal (host) Abby Hoffman 0 5 6 11
1980 Moscow Sue Holloway did not compete
1984 Los Angeles Alex Baumann 10 18 16 44
1988 Seoul Carolyn Waldo 3 2 5 10
1992 Barcelona Michael Smith 7 4 7 18
1996 Atlanta Charmaine Crooks 3 11 8 22
2000 Sydney Caroline Brunet 3 3 8 14
2004 Athens Nicolas Gill 3 6 3 12
2008 Beijing Adam van Koeverden 0 0 0 0
Total 55 85 102 242

Usually it seems that Canada does a lot better at the Olympics but this year? Not so good. I am not sure why. Actually the Winter Olympics are much better for us since there are many more months of winter in this country than Summer months.

Anyway someone please let me know without giving into government bashing as to why we have sucked it so hard this year so far.

Again don’t try to blame the athletes! They train for years and years with no income to try to win a medal, they are not to blame as individuals at all.

Beijing 2008 Olympic Games

I have been watching the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games for about a week now and man it has been great on the HDTV. I recently moved as you can see from two posts down and one of the things that I have been saying for years is that I really wanted to watch sports, especially tennis and the US Open in HD…

Well during the move I made a play on my wife that I wanted to move to Satellite. Once that was in the bag I worked on getting a PVR and sadly our old big screen would not work with a dual tuner PVR unless it would work in HD.

One sale, two store and I had a 42 inch LCD and now the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games are on and in two weeks tennis.

Good for me.

I am a Twitter user, actually I use TwitterFox in Firefox to constantly get comments from people across the internet and am starting to know the 120 or so people that I follow very well.

In real life I talk to 3 other people at home, 15 or so people at work on a daily basis and every week I talk to another couple of family members.

So, does this mean that the internet and Twitter are my biggest family and friends. That isn’t just boring but a bit more loserish than it should be
