I remember when I was living in BC and the voting ended at 8:00 in every time zone and back then there was no internet to let us know the results. Every time it seemed I would turn on the TV at 8:00 and Lloyd Robertson would tell me that one party or another already had a majority. AND MY VOTE WASN’T COUNTED YET.

Times have changed and poll closing times have been staggered across the country. Voting hours across the country are here.

In talking to all of the people around my cube it seems that I am not the only one voting conservative in the Canadian Federal Election on January 23rd. I have decided to make a list of the top 10 reasons to vote conservative.

1. Ethics in government. Am I the only one tired of the Liberal party thnking that they know best and doing whatever it takes behind the Canadian citizens backs to get things their way? Breaking laws in the Quebec referendum debate in 1995, stealing federal money to funnel into the party to help fight elections? With no special interests to have to pay fof for an election win the Conservative party would be in a better position to get things done from an ethics viewpoint.

2. Transfer of money to the provinces. One of the ways that the Liberals have ben able to get the budget surplus is by reducing transfer payments to provinces. Transfer payments for provinces pay for health care and other services and by not paying these the Liveral government has put a greater strain on the provinces. The Conservative party has talked a lot about fixing this inequity but the Liberals have not mentioned it at all on the campaign trail.

3. Effective gun control. The Liberal party decided to set up a gun registry program, why, I have no Idea. A gun registry can not effectively help anyone as guns used in crimes would never be registered by the owners committing gun crimes. The Canadian gun registry has also been a horribly set up plan costing over 2 Billion dollars when it was only supposed to cost 2 Million dollars when it was originally set up. The Conservative plan is to use the money that would be spent on making the gun registry to instead strengthen police services and have minmum sentences for gun offences, something that we do not have now.

4. Tax Cuts that help real people. We all know that the middle class in Canada Pays most of the taxes. This is a huge group of tax payers and the best place to get money to pay for government programs. The trouble is that we do not just pay income tax, we also pay GST and many other hidden federal taxes. The conservatives would get rid of the proposed Liberal tax cut that does not make much of a difference in peoples lives and instead drop the GST to 5% from 7%. Also the Conservative party would allow people to not pay capital gains tax when reinvesting money within six months. The fastest way to kill a countries economy is to just put money into savings instead of reinvesting it in one way or another to make sure that jobs and business can be created with the money.

5. Rebuild the Canadian military. The military is an expensive part of any countries economy and in the case of internal national disasters there is no group that is better trained to help. Over the years the Liberal governments have cut spending needed my the Canadian military that has decimated the Canadian military. The Conservative government, instead of just thowing money at our current problem, would instead rebuild the military by adding forces and training, reducing overhead and taking better care of veterans.

6. Taking care of national unity. The Liberals have alienated almost every French speaking person in Canada with the attitude that Quebec must be kept in Canada because it is their province. Paul Martin mentioned this in the debates with pride. What an ass. It is not Paul Martins Quebec it is a part of Canada for the Canadians living there. The government must give back more rights to the provinces. Does anyone think that the majority of Quebecers just want a country with their name in it? Probably not, what the Quebecers always want is more rights given to the province to control their own destiny. This is what the Conservative party wants to give to all provinces, something the Liberals are very much against.

7. Health Care for everyone. Using a mix of public and private health care plus a strong central system to ensure that everyone has good health care facilities and access the conservatives can get rid of huge waiting lists. The Liberals have never given the provinces enough money to fix the waiting list problem and the Conservatives will transfer more money to provinces.

OK who’s is lying and who is looking for a good headline? Paul Martin promises to drop income taxes and Stephen Harper, not wanting to look like a “me too” candidate decides to cut the GST to 5% from 7%, who the hell are these guys trying to fool? There is no plan behind these honorable looking tax breaks there is just a good idea and we all know what happens to a good idea once it gets to the House of Commons in Ottawa.

I have never seen a politician promise to raise income taxes, or to that point even promise to keep them the same. But in out country no politician is able to get into office and leave without at least raising some kind of tax. Every politician may want to do good things and every politician has his or her own agenda. When a new party does finally get into office there is always a little payback and the books were of course cooked by the party that left and have to be cleaned up before the new agenda can really get put into motion.

What I would love to see Harper and Martin do is actually lay out a great full plan just like Stanfield presented during the 1968 campaign. Do I really think we will see this during this election?….no.

I will still look forward to the debates this month as well as next hoping to see a plan that really works from either candidate.

I am not a big fan of the liberals and now that the election has started here in Canada I am going to weigh in as much as I can.

Why is it that Liberals are so in love with Jean Chretien. The guy may have been Prime Minister for almost 10 years but longevity does not neccesarily mean good results or a good reign. During Jean’s reign the country almost split up from both Quebec seperatists as well as western seperatists. During his power there was a better economy only by doing trade with the US and he was even able to piss off George Bush when he got elected south of the border. There is the liberal party siphoning money from government contracts and finally there is the mess that he has left the Liberals with now.

In the last election just because he had differences with Paul Martin, Jean Chretien would not campaign for his old party and said that his time was over. I have never heard of a former head of state turning his back on his party like this. Now with an election in it’s second day Jean Chretien again has decided to create press for himself by protesting Gomery and again reminding the Canadian people that the Liberals have a scandal not quite behind them.

The best thing that Paul Martin can do now is kick Jean Chretien’s ass out of the Liberal Party.
