I have just seen a change to the attendance policy at the company that I work for. I ususally do not look at these things but was hoping that maybe we would start getting paid out for unused sick days, or something. I fopund the following nugget in the new policy:

If an employee experiences difficulty achieving satisfactory attendance, he/she has a responsibility to participate in the development of an action plan (with their leader) to improve attendance.

I could not beleuive what I had just read so I thought about a great conversation that one of the leads could have with a slacker that does not show up because he really just does not care much for his job. So here is the conversation:

Team Lead: Let’s talk about your attendance”
Bad employee: “Yes I would like to come up with a satisfactory action plan to improve my attendance”
TL: “OK, what is it that you need so that you will show up at work more often?”
BE: “How about letting me start later and then reduce my hours, continue to pay me the same money and get rid of the parts of my job that I don’t like?”
TL: “That sounds fair. Let’s get together next month and see if this plan will work toward your schedule and goals better”
